DEMENTIA AWARENESS CERTIFICATION

During Dementia Awareness Week (13th to 19th May 2024), Eastgate Shopping Centre hosted the Alzheimer’s Society. The charity provided valuable information and raised public awareness about dementia and the support available.

Following this event, from 26th June to 4th July 2024, staff at Eastgate, along with City Protection Officers (CPOs) from Gloucester City Safe, Gloucestershire Constabulary, and Kier Construction, participated in dementia awareness training. The sessions promoted understanding and inclusivity, supporting those affected by dementia. After successfully completing the training, Eastgate Shopping Centre was awarded a Certificate in Community Dementia Awareness by One Gloucestershire.

DEAF AWARENESS TRAINING AND CERTIFICATE

Eastgate Shopping Centre is among the first retail and leisure centres in the UK to provide staff with dedicated deaf awareness training. Delivered by the local charity Gloucestershire Deaf Association, the course resulted in our team receiving a Certificate in Deaf Awareness.

The training was carefully developed by experts, drawing from the charity’s vast experience supporting businesses and community groups. According to RNID, approximately 12 million adults in the UK are deaf or experience hearing loss. We’re proud to help promote inclusivity and improve communication for all visitors.

OUR CERTIFICATES

CHATTY BENCHES

Visitors to the Colliers portfolio in Gloucester are encouraged to connect with others through a new initiative tackling loneliness and social isolation. The ‘chatty benches’ scheme is a collaboration between Colliers, managing spaces including Eastgate Shopping Centre, King’s Walk, King’s Square, The Forum, and St Oswalds Retail Park, and Swindon & Gloucestershire Mind.

Each bench displays an inviting message encouraging visitors to sit down and chat: “A small connection can have a huge impact on someone’s day. Take a seat and have a chat.”

QUIET HOUR SHOPPING - COMING SOON

At Eastgate Shopping Centre, we’re committed to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for everyone. That’s why we’re introducing our special “Quiet Hour”—a peaceful shopping experience for visitors who prefer a calmer atmosphere. During Quiet Hour, we’ll lower noise levels, dim the lighting, and minimise distractions, creating a more comfortable setting for shoppers sensitive to busy environments.

CHANGING PLACES TOILET

Eastgate Shopping Centre is proud to support accessible and inclusive shopping for everyone. As part of our wider commitment, we’re pleased to highlight that our nearby sister site, King’s Walk, features a fully accredited Changing Places toilet, located by the lifts adjacent to Clarence Walk.

These specially designed facilities are essential for visitors with limited mobility who require extra support. They include specialist equipment to help individuals use the toilet or change continence pads safely and with dignity. We believe everyone deserves a comfortable and stress-free shopping experience across the Colliers Gloucester portfolio.
